From a sports hall to a temporary hospital – in just three days: combatting the Covid-19 virus requires unprecedented measures and Hoffmann Interior is also accomplishing extraordinary things during the crisis. At short notice, space had to be created for up to 50 patients at the premises of Pictorius Berufskolleg in the district of Coesfeld. Hoffmann Interior took over the planning, production and assembly of the wall elements required for this on behalf of Coesfeld district administration.
When Hoffmann Interior received the enquiry for the very special project on 25 March, things had to move quickly: Sales Manager Thomas Ahlers arranged a meeting on site for the very same day in order to be able to make all the necessary preparations for the rapid production. Production of the partition walls started the very following day. These are intended to ensure the separate and safe accommodation of patients on an area covering 1,440 m².
Due to the smooth interaction between all parties involved, the construction phase for the first 30 beds was successfully completed two days after accepting the order. The three-day deadline for the second part of the construction project, from 30 March to 1 April 2020, was also a decisive factor. Furthermore, the social distancing rules and fire protection regulations played a key role in the design of the construction. Thanks to decades of craftsmanship and logistics expertise and experience in working with state-of-the-art production systems, the interior design expert Hoffmann Interior was the ideal partner for the rapid conversion.
The timetable for both construction phases required quick and yet careful planning. The material chosen for the project was white wooden composite boards with fire safety certification, coated with a robust melamine finish. These boards can be attached with brackets and clips. Additional aluminium brackets serve as lintels and keep the construction stable. In order to not only reduce the amount of material used but also save time, the team at Hoffmann Interior determined the ideal panel size beforehand. The wall elements could then be manufactured without any problems on the perfectly equipped machinery and prepared for on-site assembly.
Up to 1,700 students usually learn design and information technology at Pictorius Berufskolleg with its vocational grammar school. By setting up the temporary hospitals in the sports hall of the vocational college, this will help to take the pressure off other hospitals in emergencies. The space is primarily intended for patients who are stable but are not yet allowed to go home.
